I am directed by the Earl of Kimberley to acquaint you that, subject to your ability to pass a medical examination as to your fitness to serve in a tropical climate, he proposes to appoint you for a term of three years to be Apothecary for the Government Hospital, Hong Kong, with a salary of $1440 per annum, rising by five increments to $1920, and free quarters for a single man, with food and lighting.
Should you accept this appointment, you will be provided with a free passage to the Colony on your signing the usual agreement with the Crown Agents, Downing Street, by which you will be bound to repay to the Colonial Government the cost of your passage in the event of your relinquishing your appointment within three years of the date of your arrival in the Colony, for any other reason than mental or physical infirmity.
